Concise Course in Infection Control
for Residential Care Homes for the Elderly (May 2024)
In Hong Kong, more and more elderlies are nowadays living in residential care homes for the elderly. Infections among these elderly residents are not uncommon. With intensive interaction among the residents, staff and visitors, there is a potential of transmission of infections within the environment of the elderly homes. In view of this, the Department of Microbiology, Chinese University of Hong Kong is going to host a Concise Course in Infection Control for Residential Care Homes for the Elderly.
Course Overview
This concise course provides essential knowledge and practical training in infection control measures relevant to the settings of elderly homes. It is hoped that further knowledge and skill transfer to workers of the elderly homes can be made to foster the organizational culture of prevention and control of infections in their institutions.
Basic principles behind recommended infection prevention and control practices will be emphasized. Demonstrations and illustrations will be made to enhance understanding by the participants. Practical sessions are incorporated to reinforce infection control skills. Common issues of concern of infection prevention and control in the elderly homes will be discussed with learning enrichment by experience sharing.
Course Objectives
This course aims to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of the nurses or supervisors in infection prevention and control in the residential care homes for the elderly.
Teaching Format
The course will be delivered in Cantonese.
The course will comprise classroom lectures, practicals and demonstrations as well as group discussions and experience sharing.
Who should attend
Target participants includes all nurses, supervisory and administrative personnel working in the elderly homes, as well as persons involved in infection control work in medical and health related settings, especially for those designated infection control officers of the homes or institutions.

The course will be held in hybrid format, the on-site sessions will be taken place in in the Department of Microbiology, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin.

Certificate of completion will be issued to participants after the course.
Certificate of Attendance of Continuing Nursing Education Activity
Our department is an accredited Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) provider. Course particitants who are nurses will be issued a certificate of attendance of CNE after completion of the course.
